Scratchy Fish is a new jazz ensemble from San Jose California. The quintet is Kevin Albers on Tenor saxophone, Janelle Herrera on Alto saxophone and vocals, Mike Mckenna on guitar, Sophie Schoepp on bass, and Mike Fullerton on drums.
Scratchy Fish performs improvisational interpretations of compelling contemporary pop songs from the quintet’s favorite artists like Radiohead and David Bowie. The quintet also plays classic standards from the jazz masters like Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, and Wayne Shorter.
Each of these improvisational interpretations are arranged, discovered, and carefully curated in the mystical and secret Small Room, where a rickety contraption, an antique windbox, and mirth are stirred in as ingredients.
The quintet, trained by the gnarled and exalted masters, play with an improvisational whimsy, passion, and style. They are always seeking to discover and negotiate harmonic, rhythmic, and dynamic moments and they are never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you.
